Game Story

A goal from substitute forward Viorel Moldovan in the 72nd lifted Romania into a 1-1 tie with Tunisia in Saint-Denis and the top spot in Group G of the World Cup.

The Romanian team (2-0-1 in Group G), sporting a bleach-blonde hairdo, played a sub-par match and were fortunate to come away with the point, which became needed for the Group G title after England's 2-0 victory over Colombia. Romania had a plus-2 goal differential, while England built a plus-3 in its three matches.

Moldovan scored his second goal of the tournament and 15th in 30 international appearances five minutes after he entered the game for Ilie Dumitrescu. Adrian Ilie, "The Cobra", assisted on the goal with a nice pass, flicked back from the right side before being headed by a Tunisian defender to Moldovan.

Tunisia (0-2-1) showed character in a much-improved performance after loses to England and Colombia. Midfielder Skander Souayah converted a penalty kick in the 10th minute, beating goalkeeper Bogdan Stelea to the right. Defender Constantin Galca took forward Adel Sellini down in the penalty area for the infraction.

Souayah scored his first and only goal for Tunisia in France, his seventh international tally. But with the point, Tunisia pushed the United States, which lost all three of its matches and scored only one goal, to the bottom of the 32-team field.

Despite poor play, Romania outshot Tunisia 14-10, but only six were on target to Tunisia's seven. Romania also benefited from six corner kicks to two. Australian referee Edward Lennie issued yellow cards to Souayah and Zoubeir Baya of Tunisia.

Tunisia was the first African country to win a World Cup match, recording a 3-1 victory over Mexico in 1978.
